How to Correctly Measure for Shoe Size

Measuring for shoe size is easy to do in three simple steps! All you'll need is a sheet of paper, a marker, a ruler, and a couple pieces of tape!

First, tape a sheet of paper to the floor. Make sure to use a smooth surface such as hardwood, laminate, or linoleum rather than an uneven surface such as carpet or grouted tile.

Second, place your foot on the paper and trace it with a pen, pencil, or marker. Make sure your foot is bare or in a thin, tight sock. (This is best done at the end of the day, because your foot may swell slightly over over the course of a day.)

Third, use a ruler or measuring tape to measure from the back center of your foot to the end of your longest toe. Compare to the size chart for your favorite brand of shoes, making sure to use the proper units of measurement. (Don't confuse your inches with your centimeters!)

In a few rare cases, you will also need to know the width of your foot. (For instance, Belleville asks customers to specify a width when shopping for tactical boots.) Should you need a width, simply rotate your ruler ninety degrees and measure straight across the widest part of the foot (known as the "ball" of the foot).

That's it. You're done! Hard to believe it's that easy, right? Once you've located your size, go shopping! Find all your favorite brands of men's, women's, boys', and girls' footwear right here on Outdoor Equipped!
